Dutch Room: Sampler (Remember), 2001

Hanging in tandem with Sampler (A Blurred Region) in the Dutch Room, Sampler (Remember) fills another empty frame, that of Rembrandt’s Lady and Gentleman in Black, with a detail from Michelangelo’s Creation of Adam. The image is coupled with a quotation from Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein—the paradigm of creation gone bad. In this way the work can be seen as a comment on the destructiveness of the thieves who stole two masterpieces from this room in 1990.
