Dutch Room: Sampler (Blurred Region), 2001

I hung Sampler (A Blurred Region) in the Dutch Room, in an empty frame that once contained Rembrandt’s Storm in the Sea of Galilee, which shows Christ rebuking His disciples for their lack of faith. This painting and twelve other works were stolen from the Gardner in 1990. The Museum has left the frame empty, perhaps as a gesture of faith that the painting will eventually be returned; it seemed appropriate to fill the frame with Michelangelo’s scene of God seeding life into Adam, one of art’s best-known images of the power of creation.
