OVID’S WEAVERS
Arachne was renowned—but certainly not for her
birthplace or family. Yet consummate work had
won the girl much fame. She weaves her pliant golden
threads into her web—and traces some old tale.

What shall Philomela do? Desperation can invent, in
misery the mind is keen. She hangs a web upon a
crude loom and, on a white background, weaves purple
signs: the letters that denounce the savage crime.
