Ariadne and Theseus, c. 1800

Within the labyrinth of Crete King Minos jailed the Minotaur, half bull, half man, and gave him Athenians to eat. The beast was finally killed by Theseus, with the help of Ariadne, who gave him a thread which he then rewound to find the maze’s entrance gate again, something that none had ever done before.
